The festival of Lohri was traditionally celebrated by lighting bonfires by the chief guest, and people gathered around to worship the blaze. Since the nights are cold, bonfire kept the warmth. The main attraction of the festival was gachak, jaggery and the festive foods. Everyone danced to the traditional music such as 'bhangra' and 'gidda', and also exchanged gifts.

Lohri is a festival to mark the new harvest season of Rabi crops. It is celebrated with great zest in many parts of the country as a gratitude to the almighty for good harvest.

One folklore about Lohri is linked to the tale of Dulla Bhatti. It is believed that Dulla Bhatti lived in Punjab during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar and is regarded as a hero in Punjab for rescuing girls from being forcibly taken and trafficked as slaves. Among the girls saved were Sundri and Mundri, both of whom have become a theme of Punjab folklore and the theme of a popular folk song 'Sunder mundariye ho' as well. Lohri celebration is incomplete without singing Sunder mundariye song.
